LEGO AI Builder Challenge 2026: Celebrating Young Builders, Creativity and Innovation

LEGO AI Builder Challenge 2026: Celebrating Young Builders, Creativity and Innovation

The LEGO AI Builder Challenge 2026, organised by The Lab Singapore, is a hands-on LEGO Education building competition designed to give children the opportunity to explore creativity, innovation and problem-solving through building.

The Lab Singapore is proud to be the first school in Singapore to introduce this LEGO Education Computer Science & AI Kit-based building challenge, giving children a new way to explore robotics, engineering and AI concepts through hands-on creation.

Instead of following a set of instructions to recreate a model, participants are challenged to design and build their own original robot or creation using the LEGO Education Computer Science & AI Kit provided by the organiser. Every creation starts from the participant’s own imagination, making each entry completely different.

What Is the LEGO AI Builder Challenge?

The LEGO AI Builder Challenge is a unique building competition where children are given a LEGO Education Computer Science & AI Kit and challenged to create something original within a limited amount of time.

Rather than simply following instructions or assembling a predetermined LEGO model, participants have to think, design, build and problem-solve independently.

They have just 45 minutes to turn their ideas into a completed creation. All building must take place during the competition, and pre-built models or assemblies are not allowed.

The challenge is designed to encourage children to become more confident creators rather than simply consumers of technology.

A New Way to Explore LEGO, Robotics & AI

The LEGO Education Computer Science & AI Kit brings together elements that allow children to explore building and technology in a hands-on environment.

For the LEGO AI Builder Challenge, however, the focus is not simply on programming a robot.

Participants are challenged to think about how they can creatively use the different components of the kit to build something unique. The judging criteria specifically include the purposeful and creative use of the kit’s motors, sensors, controller and track — even without code.

This makes the challenge accessible to children with different levels of experience while still giving experienced young builders plenty of room to experiment.

Three Categories for Different Age Groups

The LEGO AI Builder Challenge is divided into three age categories:

🧒 Kinder Category — 4 to 6 years

Our youngest builders are encouraged to explore their imagination, experiment with LEGO components and turn their ideas into a physical creation.

👦 Junior Category — 7 to 9 years

Junior participants are challenged to think more intentionally about their design, construction techniques and the features they can incorporate into their creations.

🤖 Coder Category — 10 to 12 years

Older participants have the opportunity to demonstrate more advanced building techniques and creative use of the LEGO Education Computer Science & AI Kit.

The three categories allow children to compete alongside participants within their respective age groups.

What Can Participants Build?

That’s entirely up to them!

Participants receive one official LEGO Education Computer Science & AI Kit and can use the components provided to create their competition entry. External LEGO pieces, additional accessories and non-LEGO materials are not permitted.

Participants also cannot use printed instructions, reference images, videos or guides for existing LEGO sets during the build. This ensures that each creation comes from the participant’s own imagination and ideas.

Completed robots must fit within a maximum size of 25 cm × 25 cm × 10 cm.

With limited time, limited materials and no step-by-step instructions, every participant has to make their own creative decisions.

How Are the Creations Judged?

The competition is scored out of 40 points, across four judging criteria:

🧠 Creativity & Originality — 10 points

Judges look for a genuinely new idea rather than something that simply copies a familiar design.

🧱 Building Technique — 10 points

Judges consider how well the creation is constructed, including thoughtful connections and whether the build remains stable when handled.

🤖 Use of New Kit Features — 10 points

Participants are encouraged to make purposeful and creative use of features from the LEGO Education Computer Science & AI Kit, including motors, sensors, the controller and track — even without code.

⭐ Overall “Wow” Factor — 10 points

Does the creation have a clear theme, name or story? Does it make the judges stop and take notice?

Together, these criteria allow the judges to look at the complete creation rather than simply whether it can perform a particular function.

🏆 Meet Our 2026 Champions

After an exciting day of building and judging, we’re delighted to announce our three category champions!

🥇 Kinder Category

Khoo Rui Qian

🥇 Junior Category

Eaden Khew

🥇 Coder Category

Ezekiel Tan Yi Jie

A huge congratulations to all three champions! 🏆

We would also like to congratulate every child who took part in the LEGO AI Builder Challenge 2026.

With only 45 minutes to create something from the LEGO Education CS & AI Kit, participants had to think quickly, make decisions independently and overcome challenges along the way.

Each participant also had up to one minute to present their creation to the judges, explaining their design concept, features, inspiration and intended functionality.

For us, that is what the LEGO AI Builder Challenge is ultimately about — giving children the confidence to think for themselves, build their ideas and create something that is uniquely theirs.
